As you have heard by now, the EUS is running a referendum at the end of November to attempt to implement a fee to go towards the construction of a new Engineering Student Center. This is a very exciting project with the potential to shape Engineering at UBC over the next several decades at least.

The vision at this time is to build an approximately 9,000 sq. ft. Engineering Student Center located where the Cheeze currently stands. This building would contain large amounts of open study space as well as group project and social space. The project is a completely student-led initiative; if the referendum succeeds, the building would be designed through extensive consultation with students and would be customized to meet student needs. The facility would also be completely managed by engineering students to ensure the building would always be open and available for use by Engineering students.

The fee in question would be an incremental fee, and would start next fall at $15; rise to $30 in 2010/2011, and finally rise to $50 in 2011/2012. The fee would remain at this level (indexed to CPI) until financing obligations for the building were paid off.
