Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair :
Lab Tours @ UBC

The Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF - www.gvrsf.ca) is recruiting volunteers to lead UBC lab tours from 8am-10:30am on Friday April 8th, 2011.  Tour guides supervise and walk high school students from the
UBC SUB to a UBC lab where a grad student or Professor will explain the research done at the lab.  Tour guides participate in the research lab tour
but do not need prior knowledge of the research of the lab they visit.

Every year 300 high school students from across the Lower Mainland participate in the GVRSF. One of the highlights for many of the participants are the tours of labs on the UBC campus.  Over 20 labs have signed up to host the tours and teach the students about their research.

Duties of the campus guide volunteers are:
  • Complete a tour walk-through before April 8th to ensure they know the location of the lab. All guides will be informed of their lab location by email.
  • Arrive at 8:10am at the second floor of the UBC SUB in front of the party room.
  • Lead the student tour (with another campus guide volunteer or parent volunteer) to and from the lab on the day of the fair
  • Participate in the research lab tour.  No prior knowledge of the research of the lab visited is required because a graduate student or Professor will explain the research done at the lab.
  • Ensure that all students return safely.
  • Encourage participants to engage in the tour.
  • Volunteers will be dismissed at 10:30am from the SUB.

All volunteers receive a personally addressed letter thanking them for the 2.5 hours of volunteering they did as campus tour leader. The letters will include background information about the GVRSF and the importance of their volunteer work for the success of the GVRSF.
